I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who supports this network. Feel free to contact me at any time. I live in Seoul, South Korea but travel back to Florida 4 times a year to visit my martial arts businesses there. I am also the editor of World Martial Arts Magazine and the host of a few martial arts related radio shows on the Action Radio Network.
Best Regards,
Richard Hackworth

If you’re marketing a traditional martial arts school, I would say this is an important question that you need to be asking. The explosion of MMA continues as the UFC remains the dominant force; expanding across the globe and adding new countries, states, and venues every year.
Mixed Martial Arts will soon be on the level of the likes of the NFL and is popular with the same demographic. As it continues to grow in popularity, I foresee the expansion of MMA schools teaching children and amateur o…

As an active instructor, I was showing a student how we do a "ninja run" when "twang" went a muscle in the front of my quad. Extremenly painful to touch, I could still walk but just. Getting home that night I immediately iced the area and put the leg up.
Seaching the internet I'm sure it is a strained Rectus Femoris muscle which is one of the 4 quad muscles. Quite a commom injury for soccer players and sprinters. Nearly 24 hours later, I have it strapped but are hobbling. Difficult to take class…

Just wanted to post a quick note to let you guys know we're having a blast here in Austin this weekend. We have a great group of 16 instructors (several last minute cancellations - too bad) from all over the country (one guy drove from Illinois!) here to learn how to thrive in this economy.
Last night I lectured for three hours on data, trends, and research related to changing social and economic conditions affecting the martial arts industry. Jeff Barnes also did a presentation covering how he…

This one had some of the guys on my email list rolling:

It is pretty funny, but I have to say I've been "guilty as charged" on most all the things I mention in the article.

This is something that has carried me through
all challenges and "setbacks" (not a word I care to use, but it's descriptive for most people) over 15 years of running schools:

One thing people in the industry have failed to notice is that not only has the economy changed – the way we find and attract new students has changed as well. In fact, it’s changed dramatically…

after trying different marketing ideas over the years some good - some bad.
I decided to take a different approach, a good friend of mine in the music industry sparked this idea.
What if you gave away (Taught) your classes for free? Much like the forward thinkers of the music industry that give away free downloads to hook new fans, developing a fan culture to upsell to.
In theory this sounded like an interesting concept, that I have pursued to some extent. The Model I have devised has been extr…

Juppô Sesshô
Today's Ramble is brought to you by the concept of Juppô Sesshô [十方折衝]:
十 Juu: ten, tenth; complete; perfect.
方 Hou: a square, rectangle; a region; local.
折 Setsu: break off, snap; bend.
衝 Shou: rush against, charge ahead.
At a basic level, this can mean to be able to fight in 10 (all) directions (the eight directions of a compass including vertical directions). This can basically suggest freeing yourself from the fixed directions that many of our teachers show us, and quite often…

This is something that a few of my coaching site members were discussing today...
- MM
George Denson said, "Amazing how well the economy is if you do not watch the news - lol."
That's the truth!
I know of school owners who are bringing in $200 a month or more per student from Pro Shop sales, tuition, and added profit events... in this economy.
It's all about what you believe - if you think it's impossible, no one would pay that, people don't have the money, etc. - that's what your reality i…

“…correct hitting is invisible. The enemy should fall without seeing your hands.” Chinese Martial Arts Text
Punching is common to almost all the martial arts. As a basic strike it is unparalleled in terms of usability and effectiveness. Almost anyone can throw a half decent punch, if not a power punch, no matter what level of skill or experience they are at, which is why the punch is so popular amongst martial artists and non martial artists alike. It is probably utilized more often than the ki…

"I am not going to go on with the fellow who does not respond by lifting up three corners when I have already lifted up one." -Confucious
I was recently re-reading the Tengu Geijutsu Ron (天狗芸術論 ), which contain instructions on Swordplay supposedly by Tengu ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengu ). The book was written by one Issai Chozanshi, supposedly someone who had no previous martial knowledge prior to writing this book.
I found a interesting piece from the Tengu on the ways of teaching:

Note: I currently teach at a YMCA, and have been asked by a fellow site member how I got my program in. So I would like to share the following with everyone.
The first thing to do is either visit their website or call to see if they offer a Martial Art or Karate program - if they do not, find out who you need to speak with...in my case, when I taught out of a Rec Center, it was the Fitness Director; at the YMCA, it was the Youth Sports Program Director.
Most of the time, depending on th…
