About Luke Crocker

Luke Crocker began his Budo (martial Arts; 武道) training in 1992 at the age of 6. His first practice was in Shotokan/ American Kempo Karate, soon changing locations to a Shito-Ryu karate dojo in Northern Ontario and eventually ending up with a Goju-ryu Karate Dojo in barrie Ontario. This process took 12 years of training and searching. Being disatisfied with the Martial Arts "Industry" he went on a bit of a soul search and found a Bujinkan Dojo in Toronto, Ontario. Here he studied and trained for a year before enrolling in a Year-long intensive as an "Uchideshi" (Living-in Student). One year later he traveled to Japan to Train with the Grandmaster. Reciently he has undergone Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training and has now begun to teach Yoga. Currently settled down in Barrie, Ontario, Luke Strives to further his studies and find others with similar goals and ambitions.

People seem to think that its bad for business to refuse to water down your teachings for the sake of keeping students intrested. I often tell them that I don't want the students that need me to feed their ego's and make them feel good. That will ge…

I love that three corners quote from K'ung-Fu-Tse... and, it amazes me how many instructors are unwilling to do so when it comes to learning how to handle the business side of teaching. Thanks for posting this article.

Juppô Sesshô no Jutsu

Juppô Sesshô

Today's Ramble is brought to you by the concept of Juppô Sesshô [十方折衝]:
十 Juu: ten, tenth; complete; perfect.
方 Hou: a square, rectangle; a region; local.
折 Setsu: break off, snap; bend.
衝 Shou: rush against, charge ahead.

At a basic level, this can mean to be able to fight in 10 (all) directions (the eight directions of a compass including vertical directions). This can basically suggest freeing yourself from the fixed directions that many of our teachers show us, and quite often… Continue

On Teaching...

"I am not going to go on with the fellow who does not respond by lifting up three corners when I have already lifted up one." -Confucious

I was recently re-reading the Tengu Geijutsu Ron (天狗芸術論 ), which contain instructions on Swordplay supposedly by Tengu ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengu ). The book was written by one Issai Chozanshi, supposedly someone who had no previous martial knowledge prior to writing this book.

I found a interesting piece from the Tengu on the ways of teaching:

"N… Continue
